IndyCar seals return to Brazil with 2015 Brasilia race
IndyCar's long-expected return to Brazil has been confirmed, with the series set to race at Brasilia's Autodromo Internacional Nelson Piquet on March 8 next year
Plans for a return to Brazil have been in the works for many months, and Mark Miles, CEO of IndyCar parent company Hulman & Co, said that confirmation of the race is a significant step in the ongoing rebuilding of the series.
"We're eager to continue IndyCar's rich history of racing in Brazil with today's announcement of an IndyCar Series event in Brasilia next season," Miles said.
"This event is an instrumental step in the growth of IndyCar as we continue to execute our strategy of adding race markets and events that drive us forward.
"IndyCar fans throughout the world are unbelievably enthusiastic about our sport and we're excited to showcase another thrilling event next season."
The track, a permanent circuit built in 1973, will be the third Brazilian venue to have hosted IndyCar racing.
The series first visited the country when it raced in Rio between 1996 and 2000 (pictured below), and later moved to a street circuit in Sao Paolo between 2010 and '13.
"It's awesome news that we're going back to Brazil next year," said 2013 Indianapolis 500 winner and 2004 series champion Tony Kanaan.
"The fans there love IndyCar and support the race, and we also have Brazilian sponsors involved in our sport, so racing in my home country is a no-brainer.
"I raced at the Brasília track a very long time ago, in the beginning of the '90s, but I remember it being very cool. I can't wait for IndyCar to get back there in 2015."
Brasilia follows New Orleans as the second new venue to be confirmed for the 2015 IndyCar calendar.
The race is scheduled to be the last to feature the current-era bodykits, with manufacturer aero kits slated for introduction at the first US event in St Petersburg on March 29.
The full 2015 schedule is still yet to be announced.
