Daytona 24 Hours: Action Express leads tight pack into final hours
The best of the Action Express Coyotes headed the six cars on the lead lap as the Daytona 24 Hours hit two thirds distance
Christian Fittipaldi aboard the Coyote-Chevrolet Corvette DP held a lead of just one tenth of a second over Pipo Derani in the Extreme Speed Motorsports Ligier-Honda JSP2.
Derani had overtaken Ricky Taylor in the Wayne Taylor Racing Dallara-Chevrolet Corvette DP for second shortly after the race went green a couple of minutes before the 18-hour mark following the 19th safety-car period.
Jonny Adam was fourth in the second of the Action Express cars a further two seconds behind, with Ryan Dalziel fifth in the Spirit of Daytona Coyote-Corvette.
Andy Priaulx ran sixth in the #01 Chip Ganassi Racing Riley-Ford EcoBoost DP, while the sister car with Tony Kanaan at the wheel was seven laps down in seventh position.
The Michael Shank Racing Ligier-Honda JSP2 retired from the lead with Oswaldo Negri Jr at the wheel halfway through the 10th hour with a sudden engine failure.
The two Chevrolet Corvette C7.Rs led the GT Le Mans class, with Antonio Garcia holding a one-second lead over team-mate Tommy Milner.
Frederic Makowiecki, who briefly jumped into the class after the race went green, was third in the best-placed of the factory Porsche 911 RSRs.
BMW lost its #100 M6 GTLM at 3am when Lucas Luhr crashed heavily at Turn 1 after a suspected brake disc failure.
The Prototype Challenge class was led by the JDC-Miller ORECA-Chevrolet FLM09 with Chris Miller at the wheel.
Andy Lally led the GT Daytona class aboard the Magnus Racing Audi R8 LMS from Jesse Krohn's Turner Motorsports BMW M6 GT3.
